AUGUST WORKSHOPS NOW OPEN
Liam is currently in Year 1 at an international school in Bangkok and has been learning with me for nearly a year. He began his phonics journey during the summer holidays using a Puzzle the Panda phonics kit, and then started online lessons with me in August.
Since then, Liam has completed the Puzzle the Panda and Wug the Alien phases of my phonics programme and is now a few weeks into the final stage, Trick the Robot.
Over the past year, Liam has made remarkable progress. He has gone from finding it difficult to blend CVC words to reading fluently at the blue book level. I’m incredibly proud of how far he has come. One of my favourite things about teaching Liam is seeing how his face lights up when we open a book and hearing all the thoughtful questions he asks about the little details he notices!
Liam's mum kindly took the time to answer a few questions about the progress he has made.
“What made you decide to try phonics lessons for Liam?”
Liam was struggling to read and I wasn’t sure of the right way to teach him.
“What challenges was Liam facing with reading or writing before starting?”
Liam could not really string sounds together in the beginning. He also needed help with his fine motor skills and he could not control the size of his letters.
“What changes have you noticed since starting the lessons?”
The pace of development has been so impressive. From not being able to string sounds together, he is reading entire books! He is getting praised by his teachers in school and is much more confident now. Most importantly, he loves books.
“What does Liam enjoy most about the sessions?”
He looks forward to seeing Alice, who’s very engaging. He loves it when there’s a book to be read at the end or a game to be played. Alice has a great energy with kids.
“What would you say to another parent thinking about Jigsaw Phonics tutoring?”
I highly recommend it! Even Liam’s teachers in school know that he’s getting phonics tutoring, and they say: “Whatever he’s doing now, stick with it."
J – A 7 year old boy who struggled with reading...
Whilst J had started to learn to read, he had only been exposed to letter names, rather than the sounds. He lacked confidence in his reading and often avoided reading at home. His parents knew he needed some personalised support to help him catch up with his classmates at his new school.
How I helped...
J started off with a two lesson trial. Here, I was able to assess where he was in his phonics and reading journey and give him a taste of what my online sessions looked like. The next week he started his lessons and his progress ever since has been incredible.
His lessons have been quick paced, hands on and most of all fun! J loves an element of competitiveness when he plays games with the other children in his group; his favourite thing to say is ‘come on boys team, lets beat Ms Alice!’
From 'I Can’t' to 'I Can!'...
J. now reads with confidence, blends tricky words, and proudly reads aloud to his family. He’s gone from avoiding books to picking them up on his own! His parents say, “He has made tremendous improvements since he started with you. You have planned for and taught him so well!’
